Miss2Bees: Don Cheadle said LeBron James put in an Oscar-worthy performance. Do you agree with this statement?
Malcolm D. Lee: Oscar-worthy? I mean he’s really good. I mean, LeBron is a tremendous talent. I think it has a long range. So me, what I’m saying is that this won’t be his last film and it will be well deserved.
MS2B: I think this is your first time doing animation, isn’t it? Were there any difficulties you faced?
MDL: Much! I mean, you know, just, you know, not knowing the process of animation and how it works and the visual effects. That intimidated me very much, but when I understood what it was about and how the process worked, I was totally in it. And I just felt like these are just storytelling tools that are included in the filmmakers. Toolbox. So I was very happy to break the veil of mystery and say, ‘Oh, okay. That’s how it works. ‘ And so luckily I had some of the best people in the business working with me, both on the animation side of the Warner Animation Group and on ILM (Industrial Light and Magic). So, you know, having her there to show me the strings, that was like, oh, okay. But if I hadn’t had 10 films and 20 years of experience, there was no way I could have made this film.
MS2B: Was the funniest moment to make this film?
MDL: You know, I, I think I would say it wasn’t necessarily like that when I was shooting because it was very, very hard. I would say it was amazing every time we did a visual effects review and saw where we were getting on with our characters or our world structure. It was like Christmas on my birthday, watching the movie get higher and higher with every pass we made. So I think that was most of the crap.
MS2B: Who is your favorite Looney song? Character,
MDL: Daffy Duck. This is my type, man. He’s sarcastic and funny. You always have a plan to make money. It does not always work. Um, he’s easy, he’s, he’s the funniest for me.
MS2B: So we don’t have much time left, but you’ve been in the game for a long time, contributed to Hollywood with The Best Man and Girls Trip. Are you planning to be a part of the TV series The Best Man?
MDL: Of course I’m the spearhead. This series won’t run without me.
MS2B: How is the progress? Can we get exclusive insights into this project?
MDL: We’re going to start our writer’s room very, very soon. And we’ll start filming in February.
MS2B: I’m curious if Terrence Howard will be there? Because he announced his resignation immediately afterwards rich completed.
MDL: He’s retired, but he’s coming out of retirement for good.
