breaking Bad is often considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time. Characters such as Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, Saul Goodman and Gus Fring have been revered in the TV show character canon. Even after the show ended, Saul Goodman received his spin-off Better call Saul, and fans wanted and speculated about a possible spin-off about the early days of Gus Fring, played by Giancarlo Esposito.
With only 6 episodes left in the final season of Better call Saul, Esposito appeared on one Late Show with James Corden. He was asked if fans could ever expect a spin-off based on the origins of Gus Fring.
“It’s over. It will be over,” Esposito said before revealing that series creator Vince Gilligan may be willing to explore the origins of Esposito’s character.
“Vince Gilligan said to me, ‘It’s not over until it’s over,'” he added. “Is that a hint? For me that could be a clue, because as an actor I take it [to mean] ‘It could be something else.’”
Esposito continued, “There’s another show in my brain… called ‘The Rise of Gus’.”
However, this isn’t the first time Esposito has hinted at the possibility of a spin-off from Gus Fring. In conversation with insider In April, the actor said he felt there was enough material to potentially explore the rise of Gus Fring.
“The last days [on set of Better Call Saul]I’m in tears and I look over my shoulder and I hear Vince say, ‘You never know,'” Esposito said. “And that’s what I’ve always wanted and felt like there’s room for material for Gus’ rise. I think it would be interesting to know where he came from.”
Esposito added, “I feel like he comes from a really wealthy family and had the opportunity to not only run the family but the government in another country. He had that kind of brain, that charisma, that physique, and he traded it because he wanted to be his own man. There is something fascinating about that for me.”
