Ice Cube was recently revealed in an episode of drinking champs that Warner Bros turned down two scripts he submitted for the fourth and final part of the film Friday Franchise.
Cube told NORE and DJ EFN during a live taping of drinking champs during LL Cool J’s Rock The Bells weekend. “I’m trying to get it out of Warner Brothers, they don’t believe in the cultured person,” Cube said. He then added that Warner Bros will also retain distribution rights to the film series. “I had two scripts. I wrote one; it was the shit. They said, ‘Yo, we don’t want Craig and Day-Day in jail because Craig and Day-Day went to jail for selling weed before it was legal!’
Cube added, “Then after they turned it down, they had all these damn movies about going to jail:Orange is the new black… get strongSo then I wrote another script and the script was really about that…the boys in the hood have beef with the OGs in the hood and Craig has to come back and squash that because Smokey’s son is the new Deebo and he’s wylin!
Cube said Warner also turned down that script, and in the meantime both John Witherspoon and Tommy Lister Jr. had passed. “They stumbled on this, man, they were fucking around and then John Witherspoon walked by. Then Deebo passed… they just screwed it up.”
LL Cool J eventually showed up while Cube was talking and chimed in on the situation with him and Warner and calledFridayfranchise an “incredible franchise” that “definitely needs to continue.”
However, this isn’t the first time Cube has publicly opposed Warner Bros. At John Witherspoon’s funeral in 2019, Cube called out the studio for not allowing Witherspoon to reprise one of his most beloved characters one last time.
“I really apologize to my friend for not getting the next oneFridaymade a movie,” Cube said.
“It’s not my fault. Some stupid people in Hollywood at New Line Cinema if you want … you can email Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener if you think like me. Yes, you punks had two scripts and you didn’t want to do it.
Cube added: “That’s the reality. We’ve been trying to make this film for years, but we just couldn’t make it. We have the other three and we have our memories.”
