Ryan Coogler was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a police car after being falsely accused of attempting to rob a Bank of America in Atlanta.
According to TMZ, the incident happened in January. Coogler walked into the Bank of America branch wearing a mask, sunglasses and a hat and wrote a note to the bank clerk, asking them to withdraw $12,000 from his account. Coogler also urged the cashier to be “discreet” and count the money away from the counter.
When the teller went to make the transaction, it set off some sort of alarm and she notified her boss that Coogler was trying to rob the bank. When authorities arrived, they handcuffed Coogler and two men who were waiting for Coogler in an SUV.
After some investigation, authorities realized they had made a mistake and let Coogler go.
In a statement to Diversity, Coogler said the incident did indeed occur and the issue has since been resolved. “This situation should never have happened,” he said. “However, Bank of America worked with me and resolved it to my satisfaction, and we moved on.”
