Last week, Chris Rock’s brother Tony Rock came to Chris’ defense after he was punched by Will Smith at the Academy Awards for disrespecting Jada Pinkett-Smith.
After watching the world go through a period of “black woman protection,” it was interesting to see the reaction after a man did well… protect his black woman.
The feelings and story behind black hair run much deeper than bad comedic jokes. From alopecia to being told our hair is “bad,” black women have endured years of embarrassment at the expense of a few laughs. Men with black mothers, aunts and relatives labeled diaper-haired, bald and worse are expected to understand the pain behind black hair. Acceptance, convenience, time management and a lack of hair knowledge have all contributed to black women’s hair journey. While it can be as personal as personal hygiene for many, it’s always confusing when men talk about issues that affect women.

Tony Rock tweeted that everyone should watch his brother’s movie Good Hair to prove that Chris doesn’t mind Women of Color. That quickly turned bad when he was reminded of how poorly Chris portrayed black women in Good Hair, a film he allegedly stole from another black woman.
From explaining to White America how and why Michelle Obama wears woven fabrics to turning up her nose at women who loosen their hair, Chris Rock’s disdain for black women’s hair choices was inevitable. his movie good hair should teach others about our hair journey. Reminiscent of the child who goes to school and tells all the affairs of his family. While celebrities endorsed the film and women in the film laughed nervously, most black women winced at his film. From questioning a child about their perm to trying to sell black hair no one wanted, it was just another slap in the face to the women we’re supposed to be protecting. While Chris Rock’s own relationships seemed to fail despite choosing women with great hair choices, the question lingers… is it a man’s business to debate what a woman does with her hair?
