According to Coi Leray, age is not just a number.
Just a few days before the release of their debut album trendsetterthe “Blick Blick” rapper, stopped by “The Breakfast Club,” where she and Charlamagne Tha God got into a friendly debate about their music and audience.
“I’m 43, I don’t think your music is for me,” Charlamagne told Coi, who is 24.
“You don’t think my music is for you? So what are you hearing? So tell me what you hear,” Coi asked.
When asked for an answer, Charlamagne said he had listened to Pusha T’s unreleased album It’s almost dry.
“Okay, that’s a little dark,” Coi joked before explaining that she has no problem with Push. “I like Pusha T, but mine [album] The cover is bright and colorful. You look at Pusha T, it’s black and white and dark. So if that’s the kind of time you want to be in, you might have to tap into it trendsetter and listen to it, bring some spark into your life, light it up.”
Charlamagne argued that he was too old to hear her music. “Coi, we are not your demo. We’re old,” he said.
But Coi defended their music, saying they just needed more time to appreciate it. “It’s so versatile you haven’t processed it,” she replied. “It’s going to take some time for people to process things because you’ve still stuck with Pusha T and there are people who are in this generation now who kind of don’t make this music, except like Muni Long, Summer Walker, for example.”
When DJ Envy criticized her sexual lyrics, Coi clapped back by calling Charlamagne and Envy “dinosaurs.”
“Because it’s like looking at the history of a dinosaur, they have so many great things about them, right? And so many great things they brought to this earth. But they are like that [extinct]like they’re not here anymore, and you have to dig really deep to find this fossil.”
Charlamagne said she should strive to have the same longevity as Pusha T. “I think Pusha T is fire and I think he’s goofy, but at the same time I don’t listen to Pusha T,” she admitted.
She also questioned whether Charlamagne and Hot 97 even play Pusha’s music. Charlamagne said he’s about to perform his new single “Neck & Wrist” with JAY-Z and Pharrell.
trendsetter comes out Friday with the Nicki Minaj-backed hit “Blick Blick,” plus collaborations with HER, Yung Bleu, Fivio Foreign, Nav, Polo G and more.
