It’s been over 1,000 days without a solo J. Cole project, but now the North Carolina rapper is back with his new album. The low season.
On Friday (May 14th), Cole released his first solo offering since 2018 KOD Album. Dreamville Records’ Head Honcho comes through with 12 songs, including the previously released “Interlude”. On the production side, Cole taps Timbaland, Boi-1da, DJ Dahi, Jake One and more. The LP contains uncredited contributions from Lil Baby, 21 Savage and Morray to the song “My Life”, in which Morray sings a sample of Pharoahe Monch’s rhymes from 2002 with Styles P’s “The Life” track.
Cole officially announced on May 4th that the LP would drop with an announcement on Instagram and Twitter. “My new album The Off-Season will be available from May 14th. I just know this was years in development,” he wrote in the caption for his album cover, in which he stands next to an inflamed basketball hoop.
The fiery court that Cole is standing near could be metaphorically linked to the basketball themes the Rhymer used for previous projects such as The warm up, lights of Friday nightand The side story.
A new solo Cole album has been a long time coming. Cole teased the offer for the first time last December, sharing a list titled “The Fall Off Era,” where the title of the new release was followed by “It’s a Boy” (meaning Cole may be expecting another child ) and The Fall Off, the album the rapper has been teasing since it was released KOD. The word “Features” and the compilation album from J. Cole’s label, Revenge of the Dreamers 3 both were crossed out.
“”I still have a few more goals to check off to see if I …“He put a title on the Instagram post in which some people speculated that the rap star was about to hang up his microphone.
A since-deleted tweet by Dreamville artist Bas went viral late last month after alleging it The low season would fall in two weeks. Cole breathed even more life into the speculation when he wrote about listening to the album a few days later.
Despite rumors that The Fall Off should be released in 2020, the chatter may have been interrupted by COVID-19. Still the earlier 2011XXL Freshman has finally stopped another project. The latest release follows the label’s albumROTD3, which came out in July 2019 and received a 2020 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album.
