It was the slap that was heard around the world.
Will Smith unexpectedly smacked Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
The most talked about moment at the Oscars on Sunday, the King Richard Star stormed onto the stage after Rock joked about Smith’s wife and a sequel to the 1997 film GI Jane.
Jada, who has been open about her battle with hair loss caused by alopecia, didn’t seem amused.
“Will Smith just blew me away,” said a stunned Rock after Smith got up from his seat and ran onto the stage.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth!” Smith said Rock during the live broadcast, which was censored in most countries.
“Wow, dude,” Rock said. “It was a GI Jane to kid.”
“Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth,” Smith repeated.
“I will, okay?” said Rock.
Moments later, Smith won his first Best Actor Oscar for his role as Richard Williams in King Richard. During his emotional speech, he offered an apology.
“I want to apologize to all my fellow candidates,” he said. “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy dad, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”
Smith added: “Thank you. I hope the academy will invite me again.”
After the wild moment, which Rock dubbed “the greatest night in television history,” Smith’s son Jaden delivered a message of support to his father. “And this is how we do it,” he tweeted.
Others including 50 Cent, Drake and Boosie Badazz also weighed in.
That’s why I don’t fuck with people’s WOMEN lol ‼️ Will tired bro🤷🏽♂️ I’ve felt bad for him myself for the past few years. “That joke” shouldn’t have been said at the Oscars, they’re slipping! Make me think they had a lil beef before anything #my opinion
