Jim Jones turned down an opportunity to sign one of the biggest stars on the planet.
The dipset rapper revealed he had a chance to sign Drake but passed on the Canadian MC.
“Drake has definitely walked across my desk,” Jones said in a recent interview, according to Complex. “I got a call from [music executive] Alan Grunblatt, I think I was on tour, and Alan said, ‘I have this guy called Drake, uh, he’s an actor, he’s on Degrassi. I was like, ‘Who the hell is Drake on Degrassi?’ He let me hear him rap like this boy could tap his ass.”
However, Jones said he wasn’t sure how the hip-hop community would perceive Drizzy, then best known for his role as Jimmy Brooks on the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation.
“Then I looked at him and I was like, ‘Boy, what do you mean? What do I do with the boy?’” Jones recalled. ‘He’s an actor, he’s in a wheelchair at, um, what’s that, Disney Channel?’ I’m like, ‘Boy, I don’t know how to do this.’”
Jones credits Lil Wayne with the ability to see Drake’s superstar potential and gave Drake props as a lyricist, though he thought he didn’t look like it.
“Once again, I just couldn’t see beyond what I was seeing and shit like that,” Jones admitted. “Weezy was smart enough to do that and I remember on another tour I was in the back of the bus and I heard Weezy and Drake rapping and Drake said something about Princess Diana and it got crazy. I’m like, ‘Wow, life is crazy. This n**a is dead bad, fuck what he looks like.’”
This isn’t the first time Jones has made this shocking revelation. Not only has he refrained from signing Drake, he also claims that he refused to sign J. Cole because he wasn’t thinking about his vision at the time. “He was more of a Kanye, a college kid, college dropouts Kind of shit,” he said of the Dreamville rapper.
Jones isn’t the only one who missed out on signing one of music’s biggest names. Akon also had the chance to sign Drake in 2004-05 but felt he sounded too much like Eminem.
“Cardinal Offishall brought him to me in 2005, I think it was, or was it ’04?” Akon told VladTV. “That was right before ‘Best I Ever Had’ blew up because it was more mixtape-ish back then. Believe it or not, Drake sounded more like Eminem back then. With that demo I heard, he sounded more like Em.”
