When Kim Kardashian hosted SNL last year, she was careful not to offend Kanye West.
During Thursday’s episode of The Kardashians, Kim documented preparations for her SNL hosting gig. She revealed that most of her family could be joked about during the show, but one joke about her ex-husband was left on the cutting room floor.
The nixed joke was supposed to be featured in The People’s Kourt sketch. “SNL” cast member Chris Redd was set to play Ye and ask that Kim be his attorney on their divorce.
However, Kim worried that the joke was insensitive to West, especially since she was about to crack a joke about their breakup during her opening monologue.
“The divorce is so delicate for him,” Kim said, according to PEOPLE. “I’ll already say that part in the monologue that I don’t want to like… maybe I could talk to Chris and come up with something funny. I could just tell him, ‘Hey! That’s super sensitive for him.’”
Kim admitted that she was “afraid of hurting people’s feelings.” “It doesn’t mean that we don’t have a lot of love and respect for each other because we didn’t make it,” she said of West, who she divorced after nearly seven years of marriage.
During the monologue, Kim made a joke about her divorce. “I’ve been very blessed in this life and honestly I’m grateful for everything, for all the ups and downs,” she said. “I mean, I married the greatest rapper of all time. Not only that, he’s the richest black man in America, a talented real genius who gave me four incredible children.”
She continued, “When I divorced him, you have to know that it all came down to one thing: his personality. I know it sounds mean, but people keep telling me that comedy comes from the truth. And if there’s one thing I always want to be, it’s real.”
West previously revealed he was upset when Kim kissed Pete Davidson, who she was dating while on “SNL.” Aladdin-Sketch.
“People do things on purpose to be mean and hurt you and to play games and then it’s culturally okay,” Ye told Hollywood Unlocked. “How do you take me to ‘SNL’ and kiss the guy you’re dating right in front of me? And everyone’s like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’”
