Nicki Minaj missed the game. On Friday (May 14th) the Young Money rapper returns with new music.
Nicki finally released her 2008 mixtape, Beam me up, Scotty, to streaming services, but with some additions. This version includes several new songs, including “Seeing Green” with Drake and Lil Wayne, “Fractions” and “Crocodile Tears (Remix)” with Skillibeng.
After a four-month hiatus on social media, Nicki first announced that the new music was going on on Monday (May 10) on Instagram. She posted a photo of herself, apparently naked, covered with pillows and simply titled “Friday”. In the days leading up to its release, she continuously promoted the new music. New posts on social media. She also did an Instagram Live session the hour before the mixtape was dropped that included a conversation with Drake.
This is a welcome sign from Nicki fans who are championing Harajuku Barbie music, especially after rumors broke out that she would be retiring in 2019. The last year and a half have been a life-changing time outside of music for Nicki. Last September, she and her husband, Kenneth Petty, welcomed their first child, a boy.
In January 2020, she also faced family law issues when her brother Jelani Maraj was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of predatory sexual assault. In February of that year, her father, Robert Maraj, was killed in an accident in New York.
During this period, Nicki only appeared sparingly on tracks, especially in 6ix9ine’s “Trollz”, Mike Will Made-It’s “What That Speed ’Bout !?” with YoungBoy Never Broke Again and release of her own single “Yikes”.
Now the queen is back.
