T-Pain thinks about a dark period in his life.
Rapper “I Like Dat” reveals that he became depressed after Usher told him he “made music” on a flight to the 2013 BET Awards.
“He said, ‘Man, I want to tell you something, man.’ He said, ‘Man, you kind of made music,’ “recalled an emotional T-Pain on a clip from the upcoming Netflix series” This Is Pop “(via EW).
“I did not understand it. Usher was my friend. He was like, ‘Nah, man, you really made music for real singers,’ “T-Pain said.
He started to wonder if Usher was right. “At that point, I literally couldn’t listen. Is he right? Did I screw up music? “Asked T-Pain. “I thought, ‘What have I done? I came out and used auto-tune. ‘ He said, ‘Yeah, you screwed up.’ I say, ‘But I used it, I didn’t tell everyone else to start.’ “
T-Pain said that moment triggered a four-year depression. “That’s exactly the moment, and I think I didn’t even notice it for a long time, but that’s exactly the moment that gave me four years of depression,” he said.
A few years earlier, JAY-Z criticized the use of auto-tune on “DOA (Death of Auto-Tune)” on his 2009 album The blueprint 3.
T-Pain recently hit the headlines after revealing that Nicki Minaj had turned down working with him early in her career. “She said, ‘Hey, I’m an artist too and I’m working on my shit, so you know, Baby Chill,'” he said during an interview with Desus & Mero.
